Choice – The Greatest Freedom of All

The healthcare paradigm is shifting and self direction is the model to look for – and what every health system should strive to achieve.  It is how long term care is evolving.  Currently most long-term care benefits are on an as-needed basis, pieced together based on separate eligibility requirements, and sometimes with several different funding sources.

True self-direction, also called consumer direction or participant direction, is a revolutionary way of thinking.  The intention is to maintain a person’s lifestyle at home and in their community rather than relying so heavily on nursing facility care.  This movement offers a choice and an empowerment; a trust, respect, and understanding that each individual knows their unique circumstances intimately and therefore is the most qualified person to provide the ultimate judgment of their needs.

There will be a whole lot of shaking going on when construction vehicles large and small converge on the Owls Head Transportation Museum, September 18 and 19, for its Earth Movers & Shakers Meet and Antique Aeroplane Show.

Backhoes, dump trucks, bulldozers, road graders of any year will take center stage in this tribute to the working vehicles that form the bedrock of our modern transportation system. Individuals and businesses are invited to display their equipment. All exhibitors get in free.

Activities include vehicle demonstrations and “Touch-A-Backhoe” where visitors will be able to get up close to vehicles and in some cases climb onboard. A sand pit will be available for young people to display and demonstrate their own earth movers. “It’s a heavy metal event the whole family will enjoy,” says Museum curator Ethan Yankura.

The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the 50th Annual Awards Dinner set for October 21 at the Point Lookout Resort. Our theme, “Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence” highlights the historic role the Chamber has played in promoting and fostering excellence in the community. We need your help as an Annual Awards Dinner attendee or sponsor to sustain the Chamber’s continued growth and guarantee another 50 years of supporting economic development.

As we look back and mark the accomplishments of this past year and remember the half century of remarkable growth within the greater Belfast area, we’re proud to announce some significant achievements at the Chamber. We added focus to our economic development efforts and have taken the lead in promoting the Belfast area to visitors and for relocation. We’ve extended this to include marketing our excellent quality of place to businesses for relocation or expansion. We continue to add members at a considerable pace, having added 61 members since this time last year. Our new event, The Good Life Fest helped brand Belfast as a community of entrepreneurs and green living, while bringing much-needed funds to our bottom line.

BUT, we’re not done and we need your help!

• Plans for 2010-2011 include extending our promotion of the area as a great place to live and do business to brochures placed in local accommodations and other visitor contact points to encourage business start-ups and relocation.

• Adding a section to our area guide, Belfast Bay Magazine that provides information about starting a business in the region. This entails adding pages and a larger print run, with 5000 copies mailed in-house to select neighborhoods in June to capture the summer resident population.

• Creating and implementing a marketing campaign that requires dedicated marketing dollars.
