Citizen of the Year

Northport — The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce held its 51st annual awards dinner Thursday, Oct. 20, at Point Lookout, where Belfast attorney Randy Mailloux was honored with the 2011 Citizen of the Year award.

The theme for this year was “A Vision for the Future,” with the evening focused on highlighting the recent changes in the Belfast area that have promoted growth.

A total of eleven awards were announced to local businesses, organizations and individuals following the banquet.

Mailloux, who accepted the Nonprofit of the Year award on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, was also honored as the Citizen of the Year for his work with Habitat for Humanity, The Belfast Lions Club, the Boy Scouts and a variety of other local community organizations.

Mailloux has practiced law in Waldo County for many years and currently works out of the Belfast law firm that he co-founded, Mailloux and Marden. Mailloux has also served as Waldo County Judge of Probate and has served on a number of professional organizations throughout his career.

Other award winners were: Front Street Shipyard for Business of the Year; The Lookout Pub for Small Business of the Year; Belfast City Planner Wayne Marshall for Economic Development; Habitat for Humanity for Nonprofit of the Year; Belfast Historical Society and Museum for Preservation Leadership; Penobscot Marine Museum for the Maritime Heritage award; Maine Farmland Trust for Agricultural Heritage; Unity College for Green Leadership based on its Terra Haus passive solar dormitory; Waldo County General Hospital for the Keeping Waldo County Healthy Leadership award based on its Journey to Health program, and Lewis and Margo Dyer for Community Volunteers of the Year. The Dyers were honored for continuing the operation of the local pee-wee football program for more than 30 years.
