The Town of Unity is a regional service center for northern Waldo County with a mid-sized commercial downtown area, which includes one of the stations for the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad. Substantial numbers of seasonal residences line Unity Pond, located just north of the town center. With a population growth of about 2 percent per year, Unity covers 40 square miles.

Unity is the home of Unity College, a liberal arts college specializing in environmental studies. The popular Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association's annual Common Ground Fair is held here each year on the third weekend in September, drawing up to 60,000 visitors over the weekend. The Unity Performing Arts Center is an important cultural contributor to the area, hosting a wide variety of performances year-round.

Unity has a history of luring people from the Midcoast region's many beautiful coastal towns. "Unity to our mind is the garden of Waldo County... Unity village is the largest and finest inland town in the county. A look of freshness and neatness pleasing to see... everywhere fine farm houses with everything of neatness and care."
Repulican Journal, September 26, 1851.
