The Belfast Historical Society invites you to experience Belfast's distinguished heritage by following The Museum In The Streets® self-guided walking tour. Thirty attractive panels with vintage photographs and descriptive text will lead you through the downtown, residential and waterfront areas. Architecturally significant buildings and houses, notable people, historic events, and our maritime history are highlighted. Two conveniently placed map panels, with photographs of the numbered tour panels and an introductory history of Belfast, are located at the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Information Center on lower Main St. and at the Opera House building, corner of Church and Main streets.

The Circus Comes To Town
Circuses and caravans of wild animals were not an uncommon sight on the streets of Belfast throughout the 19th century. |

Belfast Historian's Home
This classic Greek Revival house was built in 1845 for prominent Belfast lawyer and State Senator Joseph Williamson. It was later the home of his son, Joseph Williamson, Jr., Belfast historian. |

First Church
The oldest church in Belfast, First Church was dedicated on November 15, 1818 and has been lovingly maintained by its congregation. |

The Great Conflagration
The great fire of October 12, 1865 destroyed one hundred twenty-five buildings in a twenty-acre section of downtown, including most of the waterfront. |

Five-Masted Beauty
The Jennie Flood Kreger was the largest and only five-masted ship to be built in Belfast. Launch day, March 5, 1919, drew a large and excited crowd. |

Regal Passenger Steamer
The SS Belfast, the “Great White Flyer” of the Eastern Steam Ship Co. of Boston, plied the waters on Penobscot Bay, carrying passengers, freight and mail for thirty-six years. |
