According to White, people travel from Bangor, Presque Isle and as far away as
California to attend the Belfast Gallery Walks. The diversity and scope of the art,
says White, is one of the major draws. There is Waterfall Arts, which focuses on
activist, environmentally conscious art. There are galleries like Aarhus which cater
to patrons with musical and modern-art leanings. And then there are galleries like
White's and Dufour's, which embrace art that, as White says, "doesn't fit into any
other gallery." Dufour's photographs are dark, evocative and other-worldly, while
White's paintings, as well as the work of gallery partners Julie Cyr and Sheep Jones,
engender whimsy and joy.
"There is an eclectic mix of galleries filling different voids," says White. "Every
gallery has its own character and you never walk into one gallery feeling like you've
been in another."
Parent Gallery owner Neal Parent believes that Belfast's growing appeal as a desti-
nation town has a lot to do with its authenticity.
"The town still has a Maine flavor," says Parent. "First of all, it doesn't look like
just any coastal town. It's really held onto its old-fashioned, Maine look. It is
distinctly Belfast -- distinctly local -- and that's important to a lot of people."
During the Walks, several galleries host openings at which food and beverages are
offered and new work is premiered. There to enhance the experience are various
kinds of performance artists who, during warmer months, perform on the sidewalks
and during colder months, rotate among galleries.
White says the inclusion of musicians and dancers has allowed every visitor to feel
involved and engaged.
"Some people may not be so interested in the art hanging on the walls, but something
about the music or the dancing might resonate with them," says White.
For Dufour and the other gallery owners involved, the Gallery Walks have become a
fun way to celebrate the creativity and talent of Belfast.
"The only downside to the Walks," says Dufour, " is that I'm not able to go to the
other galleries to check out the openings and chat with people about their art. There
are a lot of people in town doing really interesting things."
Belfast Arts' Friday Gallery Walks run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Friday in July
and August, and every first Friday in June, September, October and December. For

"Belfast is a vortex not just for artists,
but for people who are independent and
committed to a way of life that isn't
tangled in the idea of becoming rich."
