When Sue White and Charlie Dufour
initially talked about organizing Gallery
Walks back in 2005, they had the simple
goal of celebrating Belfast talent. Only
a small handful of galleries dotted the
downtown streets back then, but there
was a special quality to the work and to
the artists.
They were provocative, quirky, and fiercely independent all of which were attributes
that spoke to the Belfast spirit.
"When we started this, we wanted to create a community event," says Dufour, pho-
tographer and owner of Galerie Dufour on Main Street. "We wanted to offer some-
thing in town for people to do on a Friday night, but also something where people
from the surrounding areas could see art that was interesting, art that was different."
Neither Dufour nor White, nor any of the contributing organizers, imagined that the
Belfast Gallery Walks would flourish to become a destination event. But that's exactly
what they have become, thanks to Belfast's growing reputation as an arts town.
"There's been an arts community here for a long time," says Sue White, owner of
High Street Studio and Gallery. "But it's not been as in-your-face as it is now."
Where there once were only three galleries, there are now more than 20 galleries
and venues that showcase photography, paintings, and industrial art. Publications
like Yankee Magazine and Maine Magazine have taken note of the town's unique
appeal, and the Walks themselves have expanded to a celebration of all forms of art,
including music, poetry and dance.
"Belfast is a vortex not just for artists, but for people who are independent and com-
mitted to a way of life that isn't tangled in the idea of becoming rich," says Dufour.
"That really comes across in the art here."
