the economics of selling the vegetables, and the

Unity College, a private residential liberal
arts college that specializes in environmental
studies, is no stranger to community involve-
ment. About one-third of its students live in
the towns surrounding the campus. Many
students enrolled in the programs for natural
resource management and wilderness-based
outdoor recreational studies participate in field
experiences with local businesses on Swan
Lake. "Out students like learning through
doing things, and our faculty like teaching by
doing," says Amy Khrisley, vice president of
academic affairs.
Another great center of learning is the
Hutchinson Center, also known reverently
as "The Hutch." The building may not have
residence halls, but it does have a brand new
15,000-square-foot wing that includes a 225-
seat conference center, a 105-seat auditorium,
and nine new classrooms. This is where many
adults benefit from the large array of under-
graduate, graduate, and noncredit courses. The
Hutchinson Center also has one of the most
active Senior Colleges in the state.
The area is a popular location for conferences
like the Camden Conference, an international
foreign policy forum that brings together some
of the world's most respected leaders every
February.
Dynamic arts, education, health care, and
business opportunities . . . clearly, the Belfast
area has come a long way since its "chicken
capital of the world" days. "It's quite an adven-
ture living here," says Chamber director John
Burgess. "We're attracting a steady influx of
energetic, talented people and great companies,
and it makes life richer for all of us."
"There's a nice balance here," Burgess adds.
"It's not just a summer community. It's a year-
round, thriving place."
