2011 Belfast Bay and Beyond
Searsport, a town with a long and rich
history reaching back to the late 1600s,
is a small town with a lot of character.
Situated near the bigger towns of Belfast
and Camden, it is easily dismissed
as a throughway to those and other
destination towns. However, there are
a plethora of opportunities for explora-
tion, for relaxation and for taking in the
natural beauties of Maine.
Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are
only an hour's drive north, and the well
populated city of Bangor with its shops,
movie theaters and restaurants is an even
shorter drive, but nearby monuments
and parks, like Fort Point State Park and
Moose Point State Park, offer their own
versions of waterfront splendor that are
as picturesque, as stark and as vast, but
without the traffic of the more popular
Acadia National Park. There is also the
looming, cable-stayed Penobscot
Narrows Bridge, which houses a popular
observatory where visitors can take in
truly breathtaking 360-degree views
of Maine. There is Sears Island, the
relatively undiscovered gem known and
loved mainly by local residents, a tran-
quil, undeveloped island at the top of
Penobscot Bay that is one of the town's
true treasures. More than 168 species
of birds have been recorded as having
inhabited the island and its five miles
of walk-able shoreline provide part of
the perimeter for the island's more than
900 acres. Searsport Pines Golf Course
offers a 9-hole golf course for the golfing
resident and tourist. And nearby eateries
like Anglers Restaurant and The Rhumb
Line Restaurant cater to palates seek-
ing familiar, comforting and delicious
Maine fare.
Those interested in the historical
aspects of the town will want to visit
the Searsport Historic Society Museum,
the Penobscot Marine Museum and the
handful of cemeteries which provide
insight into the generations of families
and communities that have called Sears-
port home. Carver Memorial Library is
another source of history and story in
October of 2010, staff unearthed a time
capsule buried near the building back in
1910. They promptly replaced it with a
time capsule from 2010.
Searsport provides places of excitement
and exploration along with places of
refuge and serenity for the wandering
tourist. Searsport Shores Campground
offers oceanfront camping and many of
the towns Bed & Breakfasts are points
of interest in themselves -- converted
sea captains' homes that are among the
many town buildings listed in the
National Registry of Historic Places.
